Biographical Sketch: William E. Hipp III, a native of Davidson, N.C., was born about 1952. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1974 with degrees in drama and sculpture. During his brief career he was awarded a number of prestigious commissions to sculpt some of North Carolina's most distinguished citizens. These include former U.S Senator Sam J. Ervin Jr., N.C. Supreme Court Justice William H. Bobbitt, playwright Paul Green, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill law school professor Albert Coates, and UNC-Chapel Hill basketball coach Dean E. Smith. Hipp suffered from emotional and alcohol related problems for which he was hospitalized. He disappeared in 1992 and remains a missing person.

Collection Desciption: The William E. Hipp III Collection contains 681 photographs, most of which are the sculptor's working photographic portraits of persons commissioned for busts and images of his finished pieces made between 1976 and 1985. The Collection also includes manuscripts, and drawings and paintings on paper. The Collection does not include photographs of Hipp himself, however, the Portrait Collection (folder P2-H667-W716e) does have such images.
