Biographical Sketch: William Walker "Bill" Prouty was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama ca. 1913, and moved to Chapel Hill, N.C. in 1919. He graduated from Chapel Hill High School, Oak Ridge Military Institute, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a veteran of World War II. Prouty worked as a sportswriter, columnist, and photographer for The Chapel Hill Weekly and The Chapel Hill Newspaper. He died on January 23, 1996.

Collection Desciption: The collection consists of approximately 5,040 6 cm. x 6 cm negatives, 1,788 mostly 4 x 5 negatives, and a small number of prints. They were made in and around the towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough in Orange County, N.C. between 1956 and 1959. The images document newsworthy people, events, and activities of the community, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The collection also includes 35mm color slides of the October 1961 visit of President John F. Kennedy. A computer index to the collection based upon the photographer's captions is available in the Photographic Archives.
