P12: Hester A. Davis and John L. Grant Collection

Creator: Hester A. Davis and John L. Grant

Extent: The collection includes black-and-white photographic negatives (127) and prints (104), glass slides (22), and 35mm color slides (188).

Provenance: A collection of photographs made at Qualla Boundary, home of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation in western North Carolina made by Hester A. Davis and John L. Grant, anthropology graduate students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The photographs appear to have been taken in 1955 and 1956. The photograph collection (accession no. 30406) was acquired in 1982 from the Institute for Research in Social Science, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Additional items (accession no. 31003) were donated in 2001 by Hester A. Davis of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Collection Description: The photographs document the domestic and religious life of adults and children as well as leisure activities. Views of homes, churches, schools, and farm buildings are included. Copies of the masters theses of John L. Grant, Hester A. Davis, and a third graduate student, Annie Cofield Gardner are filed with the photographs. The theses are titled, respectively, "Behavioral Premises in the Culture of Conservative Eastern Cherokee Indians"; "Social Interaction and Kinship in Big Cove Community, Cherokee, N.C."; "Social Organization and Community Solidarity in Painttown, Cherokee, N.C." An inventory of the photographic collection, excluding the black and white prints, follows.
