Provenance: The provenance for photographs with accession numbers x1334 through x1365 is a gift to the North Carolina Collection from the University of North Carolina Sociology Library in 1952.

In October 1981 the North Carolina Collection acquired from Dr. Royce L. Montgomery of Chapel Hill, NC the Wootten-Moulton Studio negative archive; approximately 250 photographs, most of which are mounted and signed; and the studio's client index card file. Photographs with accession numbers 26306 through 27475 are from this source.

About 1982, the New Bern Public Library donated 137 8x10-inch glass negatives (accession number 30415).

In 1982 Mary Moulton Barden (Mrs. Graham Barden, Jr.) of New Bern, NC, donated 238 lantern slides and a set of annotated typed index cards entitled "Old Homes and Gardens of North Carolina." Of these, 217 items received accession numbers 29558 through 29774.

The Institute of Government, University of North Carolina, transferred to the North Carolina Collection those items with accession numbers 29123 through 29185 in 1984, and in 2000, those items with accession number 30985.

In August 1986, Celia L. Eudy, Kinston, NC, donated 2,947 negatives. In 1995 and 1996 she donated significant numbers of additional photographs and negatives, and family photographs and effects.

Item 30522 is a gift from Florence Soltys, Chapel Hill, NC. The source for the item with accession number 30822 is unknown.

Twenty-five lantern slides from the UNC Photo Lab Collection (accession number 30410) were transferred into the Wootten-Moulton Collection.

Series

Note: The North Carolina Collection Photographic Archives acquired the two most significant portions of the Wootten-Moulton Collection—one through lineage of the studio’s successors, the second via family member Celia L. Eudy—by as many as fifteen years apart. The remainder of the collection comprises acquisitions from various sources, the earliest dating from 1952. The organization of the collection, therefore, has changed over time. As of 2003 there were four series:

  1. Miscellaneous Photographs
  2. Studio
  3. New Bern Public Library Gift
  4. Celia Eudy Gift

Staff is currently merging all of the acquisitions into series organized by format, with the exception of family related materials.

Series 1: Photographs
Series 2: Negatives

Arrangement: At a yet to be determined time, the Wootten-Moulton Studio abandoned one negative numbering system for another. The studio usually wrote the prior system's negative number on the edge of the negative; the newer number, however, is usually on the negative envelope, not on the negative itself. The arrangement of the film negatives in the collection is by the newer numbering system, followed by the number on the negative; glass negatives, however, use the older numbers except for a few negatives that the studio assigned using the newer method.

The Wooten-Moulton negative numbers are a classified list of topical headings and subheadings ordered by a categorical number scheme. The studio used separate numberical schedules for different negative formats and types of images.

Series 3: Lantern Slides
Series 4: Manuscript Material
Series 5: Photographs relating to the Wootten, Moulton, and Clarke Families
